Avast blocked or quarantined the VanityFilter installer

Signs this is your problem

• Avast showed “Hmm… This needs a closer look” or said the file was sent to Threat Labs for analysis.
• Double-clicking the installer now shows “Windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file.”
• The VanityFilter-Setup file vanished from your Downloads folder.

Any of these usually means Avast has locked the installer or moved it into Quarantine, where you can get it back.

Option 1: wait for the Threat Labs result

This is the simplest route and the one Avast recommends. Avast says the analysis normally finishes within a few hours.

1. Leave the file alone. Don’t delete it and don’t download it again. A new copy starts the same check over.
2. Watch for Avast’s notification. When the file is cleared, Avast shows Good news from Threat Labs with a Go to file button.
3. Run the installer. Windows may then show its own SmartScreen message. Here’s how to get past that one.

Option 2: restore it from Quarantine

Use this if the file is already in Quarantine, or you don’t want to wait. Only do it for an installer you downloaded yourself from vanityfilter.com/download. Avast’s own Quarantine guide covers the same steps.

1. Open Quarantine. In Avast Antivirus, go to Protection > Quarantine. In Avast One, open Quarantine from the main menu. You can also right-click the Avast icon near the clock and choose Open Quarantine.
2. Select the installer. Tick the box next to VanityFilter-Setup-3.1.5.exe or whichever VanityFilter-Setup version you downloaded.
3. Restore it with an exception. Click the three dots (More options) and choose Restore and add exception. Avast puts the file back where it was and stops scanning that one file. Other files stay protected.
4. Check the signature before you run it. Right-click the installer, choose Properties, open Digital Signatures and confirm the signer is Sputnik Digital LLC. The SmartScreen guide shows this step with screenshots.
5. Run the installer, then paste the license key from your email into VanityFilter. You don’t need a new key.

Tell Avast it made a mistake

Reporting the file helps Avast recognize VanityFilter sooner for everyone else. In Quarantine, select the file and choose Send for analysis, then False positive. Avast asks for:

• Program name: VanityFilter
• Publisher: Sputnik Digital LLC
• Version: 3.1.5 (or the version in the file name)
• Why it shouldn’t be detected: for example, “Official installer downloaded from vanityfilter.com, signed by Sputnik Digital LLC.”

What not to do

• Don’t uninstall Avast or switch off its shields to get VanityFilter installed. An exception for one file is enough.
• Don’t keep re-downloading. Each fresh copy goes back through the same check.
• Don’t restore an installer from anywhere else, such as a download site or a link someone sent you.

Using Windows Security or another antivirus?

If Windows Security (Microsoft Defender) blocked the file instead, open Windows Security from the Start menu and go to Virus & threat protection > Protection history. Find the VanityFilter-Setup entry, open it, and under Actions choose Restore or Allow on device. If you choose Allow, download the installer again from our site afterward.

Other antivirus programs work much the same way. Look for Quarantine, Chest or Protection history, restore the file, and add an exception for that single file. Check the signature before you run it.
