CapCut puts face retouching inside an editor many creators already use. The catch is that the controls move between versions, and they are not available everywhere. Here is the cleanest current route on phone and computer, plus a conservative way to keep the result from looking waxy. Drag the comparison below to see what skin-only smoothing should preserve at close range.

Extreme close-up before smoothing, with visible pores, freckles, and fine lines
The same close-up after VanityFilter: skin smoothed and gently evened while eyes, brows, lips, and hair stay pixel-sharp
Before After

Skin-only smoothing at extreme close range. Pores go, eyelashes and brow hairs stay.

The short version: select your clip, open Retouch, choose the face controls, and raise Smooth slowly. If your build uses a 0 to 100 scale, 10 to 20 is a conservative editorial starting point, not a CapCut specification. CapCut’s official face-retouching page currently says the feature is unavailable in the United States, so check your own app before planning an edit around it.

Smooth skin in CapCut on mobile (iOS and Android)

  1. Open CapCut, tap New project, and bring in the clip you want to retouch.
  2. Tap the clip on the timeline so the toolbar at the bottom switches to clip tools.
  3. Scroll the toolbar and look for Retouch, Beautify, or Face Retouch. The label and location can change between app releases.
  4. Open the face or skin controls. CapCut’s current app materials describe automatic face retouching with skin smoothing, blemish removal, and feature adjustments.
  5. Tap Smooth and drag the slider up slowly while you watch the preview at full brightness.
  6. Optional: use the blemish or tone controls if they appear in your version. Treat reshaping as a separate choice. It changes facial geometry rather than skin texture.
  7. Tap the checkmark, then Export. Push resolution to 1080p and frame rate to whatever you shot, since CapCut quietly defaults down on some devices.

Smooth skin in CapCut on desktop (Windows and Mac)

The PC and Mac app has the same engine with a roomier layout, which makes it much easier to be precise:

  1. Drag your clip into the timeline and click it once to select it.
  2. In the properties panel on the right, open Video, then Retouch. CapCut’s current desktop guide documents this path.
  3. Open the Face section. The available controls depend on your build, but CapCut documents smoothing, brightness, makeup, and facial adjustments in this area.
  4. Drag Smooth up while watching the player. Full-screen the preview first, because the small player window hides oversmoothing beautifully.
  5. Export from the top right. Set resolution and bitrate manually if you’re handing the file to YouTube.

On desktop you can also stack a light Sharpen under Adjustment after the retouch, which buys back some of the eye and hair detail Smooth takes away. It’s a band-aid, not a fix, but it helps.

The settings that keep it natural

There is no universal CapCut number because the controls vary by platform and release. If your build shows a 0 to 100 Smooth scale, use these as cautious starting points, then judge the full-resolution image. They are editorial recommendations, not settings published by CapCut.

ShotSmoothNotes
Talking head, medium shot10 to 15The safe default. Evens tone without killing texture.
Extreme close-up / beauty15 to 25Pores are large in frame, so you can afford a little more.
Hard or direct lighting15 to 20Add Even around 10 before you add more Smooth.
Soft or diffused lighting5 to 10Good light already did most of the work.
Wide shot, face small in frame0Nobody can see your skin. Save the render time.

Two more things that matter more than the slider. First, fix the light before you fix the face: a big soft source slightly above eye level removes more apparent texture than any amount of blur. Second, judge on a big screen at full brightness. A phone preview at 40% brightness will happily let you ship a plastic face. Where CapCut runs out of road

CapCut is fast when the control is present and the job is one project. The friction starts when you need the same result across a larger production:

CapCut’s own instructions are the best place to confirm the current menu path. See its face-retouching guide and availability notice before you start a long project.

The pre-edit workaround

The fix most creators land on isn’t a better slider, it’s a different order of operations: smooth the footage before it hits CapCut. You run the raw file through a dedicated tool once, drop the clean version on the timeline, and CapCut goes back to being an editor. No retouch panel, no per-clip fiddling, no re-render every time you change a caption.

That’s what VanityFilter is for. It’s a standalone Windows app that finds up to five faces per frame (profiles included), builds a per-person segmentation mask so it only touches skin, and exports H.264 or ProRes with your original audio. Point it at a folder and it batches the lot while you do something else, and it runs fully offline, so nothing leaves your machine. Then you edit in CapCut exactly like you always did. We wrote up the full routine in smooth skin before you edit.

Quick honesty check: it’s Windows-only, and it’s not an editor. If you cut on a phone, CapCut’s Retouch at 15 is genuinely your best option and you should just use it. If you cut on a PC, or you’re grading in something bigger, the Resolve comparison covers the other end of the scale.

FAQ

How do you smooth skin in CapCut?
Select the clip and open the face-retouching controls. In CapCut Desktop, the documented path is Video, Retouch, then Face. In the web editor, open Smart tools, choose Retouch, then select the face controls. Mobile labels can vary by release. Start with a low Smooth setting and judge the full-resolution preview before exporting.

Is CapCut skin smoothing free?
CapCut markets its online face-retouching tool as free, but its official page currently says Retouch is unavailable in the United States. Desktop and mobile availability can also vary by account, release, and region. Check the controls and any Pro badge in your own build before committing a project to the effect.

Why does my skin look blurry or plastic in CapCut?
Heavy smoothing removes the small changes in texture and edge contrast that make a face look real. Lower the Smooth control until eyelashes, lip edges, and facial hair look crisp again. Better lighting usually lets you use less retouching.

Does CapCut smooth skin for more than one person?
CapCut says its face-editing tools can identify several faces in one frame. Test a short section before a long export because control, availability, and tracking can differ by CapCut version. VanityFilter is the better fit when you need a repeatable offline batch workflow for as many as five people in a frame.

What is the best CapCut alternative for skin smoothing?
Depends on the gap. Resolve Studio’s Face Refinement for node-based control, Beauty Box for plugin work inside an NLE, and VanityFilter for fast offline multi-person smoothing on raw footage before you edit.
