The decisive limitation comes first: Loom’s Touch up my Appearance and Auto Lighting controls must be set before you record. According to Loom’s current Atlassian support documentation, both controls work in the desktop app only for Screen and Cam mode. They do not appear in the Chrome extension, and they cannot be changed after recording finishes.

The short version: finish Loom’s structural edits first. Download the finished cut when your workspace permits it, inspect the actual camera bubble at normal viewing size, then test a low-strength local skin-only pass. VanityFilter processes the exported file offline. It does not run inside Loom.

Loom still has useful work to do once the recording exists. Its current editor can trim using a waveform, combine clips, and remove sections by transcript on supported plans. Loom’s Business plus AI documentation also describes post-recording filler-word and silence removal. Plan access varies, so check what your workspace exposes before assuming any editing feature is available.

Finish Loom edits before any skin pass

Run every structural edit inside Loom before you download anything. Trimming, stitching, transcript-based section removal, and any plan-dependent filler-word or silence removal should happen first. A skin pass processes every frame you give it. Process before trimming and you spend time on footage that will be discarded.

Loom’s editor changes what content survives. It does not offer a post-recording pixel-level appearance control. Trimming by waveform removes dead air. Combining clips joins recordings. Transcript editing removes selected spoken sections. Do that cleanup while the transcript and waveform are still available as references.

Download the finished cut

Use Download only when your workspace exposes it. If the option is unavailable, the local workflow described here cannot run on that recording because VanityFilter needs a video file on a Windows machine.

When Download is available, export the finished cut at the highest resolution Loom offers. VanityFilter preserves the source dimensions. A higher-resolution source gives the face mask more pixels to work with, while a low-resolution camera bubble places a hard limit on how much facial detail survives.

Inspect the actual camera bubble size

Open the downloaded video at the size viewers will actually watch it. Pause where you are talking and look at how large the face is relative to the full frame. A small camera bubble needs a restrained test.

A face built from very few pixels does not reward aggressive smoothing. Eyes, brows, and the mouth can soften into indistinct shapes before the skin looks meaningfully cleaner. Judge the result at normal playback size, not while zoomed into the bubble. The viewer will not zoom.

Test one representative frame

VanityFilter’s preview browser can sample frames evenly, randomly, or at an exact timestamp. Pull a frame where the speaker is moving and the camera bubble is visible. Inspect the original, processed view, side-by-side comparison, and mask overlay before processing the whole file.

Check the mask before you judge the smoothing

The mask overlay is the decisive check. VanityFilter segments each detected person and keeps smoothing off hair, caps, collars, eyes, brows, and lips. The screen, cursor, slides, and browser chrome should stay outside the mask.

If the mask reaches into the background, hair, or clothing, fix the settings before export. The side-by-side view then answers the second question: does the treatment improve the face at the size the audience will see? If the difference disappears at normal size, the face may simply be too small to reward a pass.

Apply a low-strength skin-only pass

VanityFilter runs offline on Windows 10 or 11 64-bit, with an optional NVIDIA GPU. It accepts MP4, MOV, AVI, and MKV input. This is a separate file-processing step, not a live Loom integration. You give it the downloaded file and it writes a new one.

Start with the Master Amount wet/dry dial, which scales the whole effect between the original and the processed result. Set it low. Raise it only after the mask overlay and side-by-side preview look correct.

VanityFilter also has controls for texture repair, brightening, shine, redness, and blemishes. A small Loom camera bubble may need none of them. Do not stack effects because the controls are available. The right result should read as a cleaner recording, not a visible beauty filter.

Watch motion and mask edges

A talking head moves through turns, gestures, and changes in expression. Watch the processed output at normal speed and inspect the places where skin meets hair, glasses, and the background. A stable low-strength result is better than a stronger result with a halo or flickering mask edge.

Export at source dimensions

VanityFilter exports H.264 with AAC audio or ProRes 422 HQ with PCM audio. The original audio is preserved. Keep the output at the downloaded file’s dimensions instead of enlarging the camera bubble or upscaling the whole frame.

The output is a new video file. VanityFilter cannot replace an existing Loom recording in place. If you need the treated version inside Loom, you would have to upload it as a new recording, subject to your workspace’s upload rules.

Choose the route that matches your recording
